As with every storm since Joshua died, 3 things cross my mind.
1. Are our supplies ready in case we lose power?
2. Are our blankets and cushions ready in case we need to duck into the laundry room for a tornado?
3. Are Joshua's pictures and personal items in a location that I can quickly reach on my way out of the house in case of a fire?
Storms happen. Of course, my first priority is to make sure my (living) children are safe and that we have what we need to ride out the storm, but just as equally important is protecting what I have left of the son that we lost.
All of Joshua's photos, clothes, and documents are next to our front door. That is not by happenstance. When arranging our furniture, I purposely placed the book shelf that houses those items, literally, right next to the front door. In case of a fire I can quickly grab them on the way out.
When you lose a child, all you have left are their pictures. When it storms, not only do I worry about the protection of my family, but also of the items that could be lost that are the only connection that I have with Joshua.
Tonight, I'm praying for those who experienced the loss of their homes and quite possibly their lives due to the storms. I'm praying for families who have lost loved ones who were not able to save the only things they have left of their loved ones. I can't even begin to imagine what that would feel like to lose those items.

Oh Jill! I couldn't imagine losing those things! Im sure you have digital backups of the pictures someplace but you might want to up load them to Snapfish as an extra precaution. But you can't back up Joshua's personal items...I couldn't imagine losing those and pray that never happens!
I just wanted to add to this, My grandma gave me an idea I am going to use on pictures I have of my children. When my grandparents were younger they had a house fire that destroyed everything they had. They have no baby pictures of my Mom, Aunt and Uncle. My aunt passed away at 18 due to a car accident. My grandmother always regrets not having pictures of her children. She suggested to me having copies of my childrens pictures to display and others to put in a fire proof box. It is going to take me a while but I am going to do this just in case anything like that was to ever happen.
Oh my goodness, Jill, I would never have thought of that but you're so right. I can totally see why you would save that stuff (I could anyway but this entry puts a whole new level of understanding on it). I really would suggest backing up the pictures somewhere... perhaps using an online site like Carbonite or an external hard drive you can keep with the clothes and documents (?). Just a thought.
