Bat

If you know Shane at all, you know that he is an animal NUT. He is hoping to go back to school this upcoming fall to earn a degree in Zoology. He says his dream job is to come home from work smelling like an elephant. Yuck. But if it's what makes him happy, then I guess I'll go along with it.

Because of Shane's love for animals, we frequently have small animals come for a visit to our home.

Case in Point:

Meet Bat:

Shane found Bat at his work and decided to try to convince me to keep him as a pet.

After some discussion (that may or may not have included loud voices) Shane told me he was concerned that if he let the bat go, it would die because of the temperature outside. "I don't care" was my response.

So after I threatened to end our marriage much debate, Shane took the bat out of the house. I thought it was gone for good. Until I walked out of the house to go to church and found this:

Yeah. He wrapped the bat in a box in one of my blankets and left it by the back door.

When he came home from work, I once again threatened to end our marriage asked him nicely to let the dumb thing go. He finally obeyed agreed.

But it wasn't with out making kissy faces and whispering sweet nothings to our furry little winged friend.

I followed him outside to make sure that this time he did in fact let Bat go. He gave me no reason to believe that he would actually follow through with it given his critter finding and keeping history!

Bat flew out of the box with some violent gentle shaking of the box. He flew up and out (as I hid and jumped at any sudden movement.)

Then BAM!

Dear old Bat flew right into the corner of this shed and fell to the ground. (I may or may not have been laughing hysterically at this point.)

Shane rushed to the shed and this is what he found.

All that saving and fighting....for nothing! HA! (although he's convinced it's still alive!)

Bat is actually pretty funny! Depending on the type of 4-legged furry friend or winged friend as the case may be, I would've reacted the same as you, Jill. I'm glad Shane finally "obeyed"/agreed to let it go! haha

I'm sad that you had to have a bat in your home, but I didn't like the ending. Shane, please redo this story and find another bat please, I want a happy ending. :(

OMG, I have tears from laughing!!! I work in an old building where we frequently find bats hanging from a cubicle wall on a Monday morning. Like Shane, I'm pretty sensitive to animals so me and another lady usually try to somehow capture the bat and take it outside (while the rest of the coworkers are swinging flyswatters and rolls of paper to avoid getting hit by the flying bat). But I admit, if I ever saw one hit a building and fall, I'd probably laugh and chalk it up to natural selection ;-).

I hope the poor little bat is ok!

We took in all manners of little critters when we were kids...I have the most tolerant mother in the world! There was Darkwing, the baby duck, and Chip, the baby squirrel. They both ended up dieing young, but we are pretty sure they were both sick when we found them. Sorry, Jill...but I am rooting for Shane and the little bat!

Oh my goodness! Shane sounds JUST like my dad when I was a kiddo! My dad worked at a grain elevator and one day brought home a bat (in a jar), which my little 10 year old self just LOVED!! I wanted to take that thing to school SO BAD! Can you imagine what the teachers would have to say about THAT one? I can still remember my mom screaming, "BILL! You get that thing out of here right now, it probably has rabies and NO you CANNOT take that to school!" hahaha!! I am sure some divorce was threatened there as well! ha! Take care mama - and remember - bats are good and eat all the nasty bugs you REALLY don't want around! :~)

Around our area bats that can be easily caught are usually rabid. Please be careful.

Oh Jill!! I know how you feel...lol My daughter is an animal nut as well. I have had all kinds of wild critters come through my home....thanks to my daughter thinking she NEEDS to save all creatures in need :)
I, too, am busting a gut laughing at your post....and husband. But ONLY because he reminds me so much of my daughter....and I can relate to you :D

Jill, This post is a hoot and I am with you!! I have been afraid of bats since I was a child growing up in Phoenix surrounded by date palms. BATS LOVE Date palm trees and in the summer, at dusk, while trying to play outside, these nasty creatures would dive bomb our heads as I would run SCREAMING up and down our street!

Now that I am older, MUCH WISER, I know that they were just trying to get the bugs flying in the air!

Ok, I am an animal lover too, but I think I would have drawn the line at having a bat for a pet. Now I would have definitely taken it to a wildlife refuge center, but keeping it for a pet ... NOT!

The only difference between a bat and a rat is wings! LOL!
