I don't know about you guys, but I cringe when people tell me "God won't give me more than I can handle."
That phrase, is not only completely un-Biblical, but it also takes God completely out of the equation of our lives. (I know that really didn't make a whole lot of sense. )

Please, next time you want to say something comforting to someone, please don't tell them "God won't give you more than you can handle." He DOES, in fact, give us more than we can handle!

One of my all-time favorite blogs posts not just from you, but from anyone ever.
I wrote an almost-identical blog entry a few years ago when I was very early pregnancy with Sean, but we were told it was likely not a viable pregnancy. It would've been my 5th miscarriage. Here's part of what I wrote:
To me, it's like saying, "Suck it up, Amy! You shouldn't feel sad that you can't have a family. You should be happy to be losing babies. It means God knows you can handle it."
Second, it's like saying God is up there going, "Hmm...I have several miscarriages to dish out...let's see here...Sally can't handle miscarriages, they'll break her. But Amy -- Amy can handle it. I'll give her at least five and we'll go from there..." Not likely.
The thing is, I'm breaking too. My hope is diminishing. My heart hurts. And my spirit is breaking. And there's nothing -- not a thing -- that I or anyone else can do about it except watch it happen.

The things that happen to us in our lives, aren't necessarily things that God does "to" us. We live in an imperfect world of sickness and sin. What people need to really grasp is that he doesn't always "give us" these things. But He has promised never to leave, nor foresake us. And He says His power is made perfect in our weakness (2 Cor 12:19).
There will always be things we can't handle. But He will always be there. In the words of Jeremy Camp:
I still believe in [His] faithfulness.
So interesting. I was helping my hubby prepare a lesson for some 14 and 15 year old boys at church, and this was one of the scriptures quoted. I never realized until that point that the scripture referenced temptations, not trials. Great blog post on the subject!
I have always believed that God DOES give us more than we can handle~ because if he didn't, we would never learn to lean on Him. :) Loving you today!
God gives us more than we can handle so we will grow in Him with His help and divine mercy and love. Thank you, Jill, for reminding me of this. God is with you all and always will be in all things. Love you!
While I know it's not scripture based, I have always taken the saying "God doesn't give you more then you can't handle" as meaning, God doesn't give you more then you can handle WITHOUT HIS GRACE. I feel when it has become too much to handle, that is when God has been left out. We can handle anything as long as God is in our lives.
